Founded in 1904 and located on New York City’s Museum Mile, The Jewish Museum is the preeminent museum in the United States devoted exclusively to art and Jewish culture.
In 2014, The Jewish Museum engaged Shift Lab to build a new, responsive website and content management system designed to showcase their new brand identity, and also the museum’s exhibitions, programs, events, and entire digital collection of over 30,000 objects. In addition to browsing the Museum’s impressive online collection, users can also leverage a robust search tool to discover website content, and create a personalized account where they can save their favorite objects, exhibitions, and events.
The Jewish Museum’s content experience is powered by Expression Engine and presented in flexible, responsive templates. In total, the website features a wide variety of content, presented to end users in various forms of HTML5 video players, infographics, carousels, and slideshows.
The Museum’s digital collection, consisting of a large array of meta information and high resolution imagery, is stored in a third-party Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) and accessed via an external API. To keep the collection and website in sync, Shift Lab built a middleware application in Ruby on Rails to transmit content from the DAMS to the ExpressionEngine website.
